Estimating your pond
Calculations
1 gallon of water = 8.35 lbs.
1 square foot of water = 7.48 gallons
1 acre foot = 1 acre of water 1 foot deep = 326,000 gallons
1 acre = 43,560 square feet |
Q.How do you determine the approximate amount of gallons in a pond?
Gallons = length (ft.) x width (ft.) x average depth (ft.) x 7.48
Q. How do you determine what size 45mil EPDM liner is required for the pond?
Determining the required liner to construct a pond is very simple. Take the deepest point in the pond, multiply it by two and add it to your length and width. Example: 11 ft. x 16 ft. pond, 2 ft. deep. Take twice the depth, 2 ft. x 2 ft. = 4 ft., add 4 ft. to you length and width. This pond would require a minimum 15 ft. x 20 ft. liner.
Q . How much water can flow through a certain diameter pipe?
Pipe Diameter Max Gallons/Hour
1.5” 2,200
2” 4,800
Two-2” pipes 9,600
3” 10,500
Q. How do I determine the quantity of rock I will need to “rock-in” the pond?
Quantity of boulders in a pond (tons)= length (ft.) x width (ft.) / 65
Quantity of 1/4-3 inch gravel (tons) = tons of boulders x .45
Quantity of boulders used in a stream= 3/4 ton per 10 ft. stream length
Quantity of 1/4-3 inch inch gravel (tons)= 1/3 ton per 10 ft. stream length
Approximate 3/4-11/4 tons of boulders to build around the face of your standard Aqua Falls.
Example: 11 ft. x 16 ft. pond with the waterfall right next to the pond.
Boulders:11 ft. x 16 ft.= 177 ft./2.7 or 3 tons of boulders (round off to be on the safe side). Try not to use all the same size boulders. We use a mixture of 6 to 12 inch and 12 to 16 inch granite. You can also include an additional large boulder (1/2 ton 16-36 inch boulders) to set into the edge of the pond. This makes a great stepping point for feeding the fish.
Gravel:3 tons of boulders x .45 = 1.35 or 1.5 tons 1/4-3 inch decorative gravel. Add one additional ton of boulders or accent stone for the face of the waterfall in front of the BioFalls.
Note: these formulas may change slightly depending on the type and weight of the stone the pond is built with.
Q.How do you determine the electrical cost to operate a pump?
Cost per month = amps x volts/1000 x $ per kilowatt hour x 24 hours x 30.4 days
